I like to travel, but I like smaller places. When I visit someplace new, I head for the museums and interesting little corners, not the sports arenas and shopping malls.

While trying to plan trips using the web, I got fed up with endless superficial travel sites that consist of nothing but empty pages. You know the type: One or two restaurants or attractions in an area (typically only the "name brands"), a few (or no) words, and pages full of ads.

I wanted a site where people could find information about the smaller places they might want to visit, and the smaller destinations in the smaller places. When's the last time you saw a hiking trail described on a major travel site? With a map to the trail head, no less.

Since I can't possibly visit and document the millions of places that people like to visit all by myself, I decided to try the Wikipedia approach and let you do it. If you've been someplace interesting, especially someplace off the beaten track, go ahead and add it to PlaceWiki so others can find it too. In the meantime, I welcome your comments and suggestions.

We'll see how it goes - the rest is up to you!
