Paradox lake from Severance Mountain

This hike is a short climb to the top of Severance Mountain. The beginning of the trail is somewhat diminished by noise from the Northway, but that fades out after the first 1/4 mile or so. Once you reach the top, there are terrific views of Schroon Lake to the South. If you proceed a few hundred feet farther along the trail, you'll come to an equally nice view of Paradox Lake to the East. The views make it worth the trip.

The trailhead is off of route 9, just south of exit 28 on the Adirondack Northway (I-87). The trail begins by running through a culvert under the Northway. On the other side of the Northway, there's a gentle climb that gradually gets steeper as you near the top of Severance Mt. The total elevation gain on this hike is just over 800 feet in about 1 mile.

Total distance: about 2mi round trip.

Travel Directions

Take Interstate 87 (the Northway) to exit 28. From the exit, head East on route 74 to the intersection with route 9 (just a few hundred feet). Go about 1/2 mile South on route 9 and look for the trail sign on the right side. Be careful, it's easy to miss.

There's a parking lot at the trailhead. The trail heads under the Northway through a tunnel and then proceeds up the hill.

Worth the hike,        2006-05-02 11:05:05

Severance was my first hike ever and the view from the top was just glorious. Don't forget to see both lakes once you reach the top and also before you startr the hike there is a register you absolutely should not forget to fill out ( just in case you get lost)

This Is Very Cool!!!!!!!!!!!,        2006-06-28 17:06:15

I really like this. It should be particularly appealing to folks who own or rent 'second homes' or 'vacation homes' in places like the Adirondacks (such as Chestertown, North Creek, Lake George, etc.). If most folks are like me, I'm always looking for a 'cool place'to go to when I am bored, on a rainy day or just for kicks( a piece of water, a hike, a vista, a saloon, a neat off-the-beaten path shop, etc) that is really cool but that I simply don't know about. Your "off the beaten path" theme has legs! Find a way to create some level of "scale" in a micro zone. Consider posting flyers or info sheets (with graphics of the site) in as many public places or places with bulletin boards within, lets say, a 10 square mile area around Chestertown. It could virally take off from there perhaps beyond your wildest expectations (don't know what you'd do if it did though!). Nicely done!

We have a Severance challenge every year. Best time up and back down. I won one year with a time of 29 minutes. 17 up, 12 down.
